In May 2014 I volunteered to design and lead a short Project Based Learning (PBL) experience for students at a school located in Asheville, North Carolina. Details about the project are HERE. That project was briefly featured on WLOS, a local ABC news affiliate TV station. That appearance resulted in my being invited to speak at TEDx Greenville. That speaking appearance resulted in Makey Makey hiring me to design, test, and refine a one-day teacher certification workshop. It was supposed to be a one year contract but they enjoyed my work so much that they asked me to continue leading the workshop and building a network of "Training Partners". Even though I was on contract, they gave me the title of "VP for Education Initiatives."
I called the one-day Professional Development workshop the "Makey Makey Invention Literacy Workshop" which was designed for for K12 educators and afterschool professionals. I built a national network of official Makey Makey "Training Partners" (nonprofits, science museums, universities, etc.) who would then deliver the workshop nationwide.
This work has allowed me to travel throughout the US (and sometimes beyond) to work with a wide variety of inspired educators who train K12 teachers.
A short video describing the workshop can be seen below.
The 36 page workshop facilitators guide can be found HERE
NOTE: Because the Makey Makey team continues to develop new and exciting resources, this workshop design is likely somewhat out of date. My work at Makey Makey ended in the spring of 2020.
